A major weather god worshipped by the Sumerians, the Assyrians, and the Babylonians as well as by some Semitic peoples as far west as Syria. He was also known as Adad or Hadad. Supposedly a son of the chief god, Enlil, Ishkur was thought to have the power to unleash terrible storms on cities or lands that had fallen out of favor with the gods. In contrast, he sometimes brought gentle rains that watered the crops of lands that were on good terms with divine forces. His chief symbol was lightning, and his most sacred animal was the bull.
